Haircare: Hairdresser Approved

hairdresser

I always thought I took good care of my hair until my recent hair appointment. It had been over a year since I had stepped foot in a salon, and my hair needed some major TLC.

My hairdresser gave me so many amazing recommendations for hair care and hair products. After asking a few questions about breakage and excess frizz, she pointed out that this was all caused by heat damage.

She gave me a bunch of helpful tips on how to combat frizz and restore my heat-damaged hair, which hopefully will help over time to bring my hair back to life (fingers crossed).

Tips for Healthy Hair:

Use salon-quality products:

My hairdresser asked me a few questions about what hair products I was using for my hair. Specifically heat protectant and shampoo and conditioner. Naturally, I answered with… something from the drugstore. She instantly said this was not a good option, especially when it comes to products like heat protectants because they often contain alcohol. The alcohol mixed with heat just leaves you with fried hair.

Turn down the iron:

This is something I am sure most of us know is bad, but we do it anyway. We bump up our hot tools to their highest temp and begin styling our hair. My hairdresser said this is a big no-no. You don’t want your iron to be any hotter than around 300 degrees, especially if you have medium-coarse hair as I do. She said the only time a higher temperature should be used is if you’re getting a Brazilian blowout. For how I do my everyday curls, check out this post.

Come in for regular dustings and haircuts:

Again, something we all tell ourselves we are going to do but never actually do. However, I had never heard of a dusting before and she explained that a dusting just removes deadends and flyaways. This form of “haircut” removes the short little flyways that are always present no matter how smooth your hair is. Dustings will help your hair look smoother, shinier, and healthier.

Hairdresser Recommended Products:

  • Olaplex #4 &5 These are Olaplex’s shampoo and conditioner. Olaplex is known for its amazing products to help reduce and repair hair damage.
  • Redken Extreme Shampoo and Conditioner I have some Redken shampoo and conditioner leftover, that I will be using until I run out since it’s salon-quality. This specific line of products is supposed to help with damaged and dry hair.
  • Olaplex #3- This was one product my hairdresser said I 100% needed to get since it repairs damage and strengthens the hair. She said to apply it to damp hair and leave it in for a while. A pro tip she gave is to apply it and then put your hair up and head outside to hang out. The heat from the sun will help the product sink deeper into the hair.
  • Olaplex #7- This was the heat protectant my hairdresser was die-hard over. She said it flies off her shelves if she has it in stock. So, I knew I needed to get it. She recommended to apply it on damp hair before blow-drying or on dry hair before heat styling. You can also apply it after styling to calm frizz. It may look like it makes your hair oily at first, but it quickly absorbs into your hair and makes your hair so shiny.

If your hair is feeling damaged and dry, try out these tips. I swear they are already changing the state of my hair.

Nicole
